From New Zealand to the world

How two brothers developed EP to support teachers and to improve learning outcomes

The team at EP are united through a common passion for making a global impact in education. The program has been developed over 12+ years, engaging with thousands of teachers and students across the globe, finding ways to leverage technology to deliver transformative teaching and learning outcomes.

The beginnings: Language Perfect

Language Perfect was founded by brothers Craig and Shane Smith in 2007. Craig built an initial prototype of the Language Perfect platform when he was in high-school and struggling to learn his French and Japanese vocabulary.

Whilst studying at Otago University Craig and Shane entered and won a business competition, which allowed the brothers to purchase equipment to build a professional version of the prototype.

Craig left university to bring Language Perfect to the world and soon after, Shane graduated from studying medicine in Auckland and joined the team full-time as Chief Information Officer.

Becoming a full-school solution: Education Perfect

As Language Perfect built a strong reputation throughout New Zealand, teachers from outside faculty areas were asking whether they could apply the same technology to their subject areas. They saw the impact of the program in Languages, why not bring this experience across to their subjects? In 2013, Craig and Shane expanded the platform to support the wider curriculum, and Education Perfect was born.

Craig and Shane led the team at Education Perfect for 10 years to create a flourishing group of educators and technology professionals. The EP platform continued to grow rapidly through word of mouth and a growing community of teachers. Within the DNA of EP sits a deep respect for the role of the educator, demonstrated in EP’s tagline – Humanising Technology. This focus on customer experience is reflected in the 6,500+ testimonials from teachers who attest to the impact EP has had on them, and their students.

Today, Education Perfect’s EP for School platform features a rich library of content across 9 subject areas and is aligned to multiple global curricula. More than 1.2M students across 2,600 schools have realised the impact of EP – a number growing rapidly.

Next chapter of growth: New Leadership

To support global growth aspirations, in December 2017 EP welcomed two Sydney-based strategic growth partners on the journey – 5V Capital and Mulpha.

Alex Burke joined EP in June 2019 as Chief Executive Officer. Alex joined the team after serving as CEO for Tigerspike – a Sydney based digital services company.

With an exceptional leadership team, EP continues to flourish as global leader in EdTech, expanding into new markets and new verticals, such as EP for Home and EP for Work, on their mission to make a global impact on education.
