EPeeps Nick Sue | Technical Support Team Lead

Hey Team! My name is Nick and I’m the Technical Support Team Lead here at EP. I’ve been with the company for almost 2 years now and have loved the journey it has taken me on so far. I was born and raised in Dunedin so it’s awesome to be a part of such a great team that has evolved from a start-up within the same city and I look forward to seeing how we will evolve going forward. I attended King’s High School here in Dunedin and then went on to study Information Science at the University of Otago. My first position out of university was a Technical Support role with a different company, however I realised how satisfying it was to be able to help people on a day-to-day basis. This ultimately led me to the position I found myself with at EP back in 2020. Outside of work I enjoy all things sports, mainly to do with basketball as I grew up playing the game and still do currently.

Why do you love working at EP?

My favourite thing about working at EP would have to be the culture within the team. There is always such a positive vibe when you come into the office each day and with so much going on around you, it keeps things exciting day to day. The team is also very supportive and if you approach anyone else within the company for help with something, they will be more than happy to assist in any way they can. Along with the positivity and hard working mentality, there are also great social events that help build relationships with other EPeeps, especially those outside of your team. Most weeks of the year, we have a social sport to participate in which anyone is welcome to join in on and is a personal favourite social event of mine.

What has been your biggest challenge?

So far one of the biggest challenges since starting at EP would probably have to be onboarding into the team completely remotely. Back when I started with the company in 2020, New Zealand had recently entered a nation-wide lockdown and meant the Dunedin office was closed until further notice. Although the team around me helped to make the process as smooth as possible, it was still quite the challenge to run through the training process and to be brought up to speed with how things worked at EP and the Support Team completely remotely, without having met anyone in person as of yet. Fair to say, I was quite happy when we were finally able to head back into the office and put a face to everyone’s names who I had seen throughout Slack.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

One of the most enjoyable things about my role would have to be the ability to help out others on a day to day basis, whether that be our external users or fellow EPeeps. It’s so rewarding when you’re able to help someone with a task they may be stuck on, or are unsure how to do something within the EP Platform. Due to the nature of the Technical Support role, you get to know both the teacher and student part of the EP platform very well, therefore whenever someone comes through with a query they are having trouble with, oftentimes you’re able to provide an answer straight away. Another thing that makes this role so enjoyable is the fact that things are always evolving, with changes constantly being rolled out with every product update. Due to this, you never know what you might be dealing with each day and it helps to keep things exciting.

Tell us about your pets!

There’s nothing I enjoy more than hanging out with my family’s dog, Wag. We brought Wag home from the SPCA back in 2010 and he is now battling away at the age of 13. He is a Border Collie crossed with a Labrador and is filled with energy although he can’t quite make it as far on walks these days as he used to be able to. Alongside Wag, we also have a cat named Otis who is now around 7 years old. Unfortunately Otis isn’t as fond of me as Wag and anytime I return home to my parents house, he will sprint out the door as soon as he gets a glimpse of me. On top of my parents’ pets, there are also 3 other cats that are owned by others within my flat. Their names are Mango, Rusty and Piper and they love to make a horrendous amount of noise at the front door until someone lets them in, rather than use the catflap 5 metres away from them.

Where is somewhere you’d like to visit?

Now that things are finally starting to revert back to normal and international travel may once again be back on the cards, there are a few places at the top of my list that I would love to visit. Firstly, it would be amazing to head over to Europe, specifically Ireland with a couple of friends who are from there and spend a couple of months travelling around the countries that are easily accessible. I’m hopeful that this is something that I may be able to tick off the list at some stage next year. Another place that is right up there for me would be Japan due to the vast differences in culture when compared to somewhere such as New Zealand.
