📚 Overview

This starter pack gives language teachers a collection of authentic assessment tasks that connect classroom learning to meaningful, real-world contexts. Instead of traditional tests, students demonstrate their skills through creative projects like video tours, maps, menus, role-plays and conversations.

Each scenario places students in a relatable situation where they need to use the target language with purpose. Whether they’re welcoming a new classmate, planning a cultural celebration, or navigating their local community, students build confidence by applying language skills in ways that feel genuine and engaging.

The tasks are designed for Year 3-9 and work across any target language. Each one is supported by EP resources to scaffold the learning along the way.

✅ This starter pack provides:

  • Three scenario-based assessment modules – “Helping a Classmate,” “Planning a Cultural Celebration,” and “My Community,” each built around a realistic student experience
  • Classroom Video Tour task – Students create a short video introducing a new classmate to their classroom, practising greetings, classroom items and simple expressions
  • Map and Directions task – Students design a school map and write step-by-step directions between locations, building spatial and instructional language
  • Cultural Celebration tasks – Students discuss food preferences with a partner, create a visual menu, and design an invitation poster in the target language
  • My Community tasks – Students create a town map, plan a route using public transport through paired dialogue, and role-play a shopping conversation in a clothing store
  • Shopping role-play – A detailed shopper/shopkeeper scenario covering greetings, clothing requests, sizes, prices and completing a transaction
  • Built-in collaboration – Multiple tasks require paired or group work, encouraging natural spoken interaction

🧑‍🏫 Teaching Tips

  • Let students choose their scenario: If time is limited, let students pick the scenario that interests them most. Choice increases engagement and gives you a wider range of outputs to assess.
  • Use as a term capstone: These tasks work well as end-of-term projects where students can showcase cumulative learning rather than cramming for a test.
  • Scaffold with EP content first: Assign the supporting EP modules before the assessment tasks so students have the vocabulary and structures they need to succeed.
  • Record the role-plays: Have students record their paired conversations so you can revisit them for assessment and students can self-reflect on their performance.
  • Mix and match tasks across scenarios: The tasks are modular. You could combine the map task from “My Community” with the poster task from “Cultural Celebration” to create a custom assessment suite.
