Light in Natural Phenomena

In this lesson, students will describe the properties of light, and use them to explain naturally occurring optical phenomena (i.e. mirage, rainbow, shimmering, apparent depth, etc).

Analysing Technology that Uses Properties of Light

In this lesson, students will analyse technologies that use the properties of light and explain how they enhance society (James Webb Telescope, Microscopes, Cameras, Lasers, Solar cells and Fibre optics).

Fact List: Types of Light Emissions

Education Perfect’s Fact Lists test students’ knowledge by asking them questions based on various subjects. This list details different types of light emissions.

“Education Perfect is an excellent resource that has allowed learners to explore science concepts and ideas. I have gained valuable feedback on the understanding demonstrated by the learners, which has informed my own teaching as well as enabled me to differentiate for each individual.”

— Andy Lincoln from Mountainview High School

Assessments with learner agency

As teachers, we often set an assessment or quiz aimed at specific curriculum levels. Then we look at the data to help determine the level at which a student is working. Have you thought about assigning these assessments in different ways? Try setting your quiz/assessments separately by level and give students the threshold/rubric ahead of time. Let students self-select their starting level, assess their progress and determine the standard at which they’re working. Let our Science subject specialist, Kirsty, show you how!

Let EP help with your end of year reports!

Take a tour of the Maths content we have available for senior exam revision.

NZAMT Conference

I had the pleasure of attending NZAMT 17, the biannual Maths conference (it had been postponed from 2021 and usually runs in odd years). The Tarankai Maths Association hosted and they did a marvellous job of looking after the 400 attendees, and the backdrop of Mt Taranaki made the heart sing! I would like to extend my personal congratulations to the recipients of the Jim Campbell Excellence in the Teaching of Maths awards. It was wonderful to connect with so many amazing maths teachers and I am looking forward to NZAMT 18 in Northland next year – I hope to see you all there!

Beginner Level Samoan content

We are so excited to announce that Education Perfect have partnered with the Ministry of Education of New Zealand to bring a Beginners’ Gagana Sāmoa course free to all schools throughout Aotearoa NZ. It will be with our tamaiti and ‘āiga mid 2023!

“I am a complete fan of Education Perfect! I love it because you can set tasks for students to complete independently. They can use it to teach themselves a new grammar point / vocab set before you even teach it to them – creating the flipped classroom effect! It can be used as a great source of differentiation. High achieving students can just keep learning and learn, whilst low ability students can use it as additional support for material taught in the classroom. It is is a more interesting way of learning vocabulary for NCEA and we love the game Dash, which can be used interactively in the classroom. I love the fact that you can show parents on parents evening how much work their children are doing and how well they are achieving. It gives students the ability to take control of their own learning and success.”

— Naomi Connolly from Paraparaumu College

NCEA Literacy

Here at EP, we try to keep ahead of the curve. While we all wait for more certainty regarding the new Literacy and Numeracy co-requisites, we have curated Reading and Writing folders of work for you to try out. As always, we are keen to hear your feedback. Rest assured, EP will be there to support our teachers.

Everyone’s a critic!

Have your students critique classmates creative writing! By adding Peer Review to both new and existing lessons, students can see how their peers approached a given question and offer their feedback in a teacher moderated environment. Students will be given a randomly chosen, anonymous student’s response, along with marking criteria. They’ll be able to read the response and rate it between one and five stars. If you have enabled commenting, students can also leave written feedback.

“I am really enjoying Education Perfect. The maths tasks are superb, and I am learning to use the literacy tasks and assessments more effectively. I will eventually branch out to the other curriculum areas. Oh, and the spelling tasks are great.”

– Tom Gordon from Breens Intermediate School

Sustainable Oceans Lessons Complete!

We’re thrilled to have completed our package of 13 engaging lessons on Sustainable Oceans. These resources aim to raise awareness of the challenges our oceans are facing and empower students to take positive action towards a more sustainable future. Designed for Year 7-10 students in NZ, these engaging lessons explore a wide range of topics including rising sea levels, ocean plastic, overfishing, and the impact of climate change on our oceans.

Almost 1 million questions answered!

Since commencing the ODT weekly quizzes in February this year, over 4,000 NZ students from 334 schools have engaged with the content, amassing a whopping 947,000 questions answered. It’s clear these quizzes are now a regular activity in NZ classrooms! EP would love to hit 1,000,000 by the end of the year.

If you are not already using them, these quizzes are FREE for all EP teachers to use in their classrooms. With ten questions about national and international news and current events, the quizzes are designed to keep students engaged with news media, which can then lead to classroom discussions about significant events around the world and how this impacts Aotearoa New Zealand.

“It is great to be able to use EP to set up additional activities and tasks that allows for greater levels of individualisation to akonga programmes. Being able to make lessons and activities to encourage greater skill development, both generic and specific to the topic they are studying in History is excellent.”

— Jenna Teesdale from Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu

Fred Hollows Humanity Awards – Winner Announced

Education Perfect are proud to be supporting The Fred Hollows Humanity Awards in New Zealand. These awards were created to recognise primary-age students who strive to make the world around them better and demonstrate values of kindness and integrity.

Madison Macmillan is this year’s Fred Hollows NZ Junior Ambassador. The 11-year-old student from Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School has donated over $1200 from the hundreds of books she has sold to the Northland Rescue Chopper Service. Madison has been fundraising since before she started school. As well as being a Chopper ambassador, she has voiced numerous radio ads and fronted many Facebook and YouTube interviews with pilots and intensive care paramedics.

Madison was presented her award a couple of weeks ago and walked away with a goodie bag courtesy of Education Perfect. Well done Madison! Your achievement is very well deserved!

“As I continue to work with EP, I continue to find ways of gaining insight into the progress students are making. I’m keen to keep working to get the most of out EP for our students so we can help them improve as quickly as they can.”

– Ben Crawford from Nayland College
