The ins and outs of homeschooling programs

To put it frankly, the education system doesn’t fit every child. There are countless examples of highly successful people throughout history whose learning styles just didn’t gel with state-provided education. Or perhaps as young people, they simply weren’t ready for formal learning, requiring an individualised learning program weighted in favour of specific activities. While public education has dramatically improved in its ability to deliver personalised education, it’s not for everyone.

Fortunately, a modern homeschool program can offer such learners an enriching, individualised education — while offering the same opportunities as a traditional school curriculum. For parents considering a hybrid, part-time or entirely home school program, there’s plenty that appeals, and in our experience working with home educators, we’ve noticed a few themes.

Why consider homeschooling your child?

To be honest, there are as many reasons to consider homeschooling as there are people in the world! But a popular factor is the ability to co-construct a homeschool curriculum that caters for individual learning styles. Every child learns differently and will benefit from a program that acknowledges and builds on those strengths. Whether it be a preference for practical, hands-on activities or self-paced learning through a step-by-step sequence of activities, homeschool programs can be designed to enhance various learning styles.

Secondly, your child may require more challenging work than their school provides or show a special interest in topics that are not offered by the school’s curriculum. In these circumstances, and in many more, education at home can be a great choice.

Furthermore, homeschooling provides flexibility for families. Perhaps a family desires to travel, lives remotely or wishes to maintain a specific lifestyle or philosophy. In such cases, a homeschooling program can provide flexibility as well as meeting educational requirements.

How do I build a high quality homeschooling program?

Starting with a curriculum package and then tailoring to suit a learner’s needs and interests is a popular method for home educators. Many of these packages follow the Australian curriculum, as well as state variations of it. It should include the basic learning areas of Maths, English and Science, as well as more specialised areas, such as languages, history and geography.

Whether your children are in primary school or high school, it’s important to ensure a program contains variety in the delivery of learning. Educators call this ‘pedagogy’. Another way of thinking about it is if ‘curriculum’ is what a student learns, pedagogy is how a student learns.

How do I cater for individual learning styles?

After confirming the curriculum, build a learning plan that uses a range of pedagogies. Consider offering multiple exposures to content through quizzes and activities, modelling key skills, deconstructing exemplars and providing worked examples. Here’s where it pays to bring in the experts. While content is provided by free online teaching resources, it cannot replace direct instruction.

EP teaching resources include plenty of actual lessons, taught by curriculum experts. Students can watch a teacher work through a maths problem, explain the steps of a science experiment or conjugate a verb. Once learning is complete, understanding and progress is easy for parents to monitor on the EP dashboard.

EP tracks progress in real-time so it is easy to see at a snapshot how your child is grasping concepts. This can help with planning future lessons, individualising learning for multiple children and also assessing how effective the program is at catering to learning styles.
