How to plan for homeschooling Ontario students

Ontario has some of the least restrictive homeschooling rules in Canada, allowing parents and caregivers full freedom to decide the method of schooling they wish to follow with their home educated children.

Getting started is simple

To get started with home schooling in Ontario, parents must fill out an Intention to Homeschool form, as part of the Ministry of Education’s Program Memorandum no. 131. Unlike other provinces, this is both the first and final step of the homeschool enrolment process. Ontario does not require visits from designated education officers or regular progress reports.

If a child is leaving a previous enrolment at a public school, a letter of intention should also be sent to the principal of that school. This is not a necessity but is considered a courtesy, allowing the school to plan ahead. When homeschooling your school aged child from the beginning of their schooling years, the local school board doesn’t require notice but it may be helpful to let them know anyway, to cover all bases.

Homeschooling Ontario parents and caregivers then have many options. Some try unschooling or take their children traveling for a real world educational experience, some send them to a farm or nature school for part of the week, while others will set up a more traditional school-like experience in their own homes – or a combination of all of the above. The choice will depend on the child and their level of ability and interest in various subjects, as well as the parents’ hopes and dreams for their child’s formative years and life ahead.

Designing the right curriculum for your family

When homeschooling in Ontario, curriculum creation is up to the individual family. The private school and public school systems follow the Ministry of Education’s Ontario curriculum, which moves through all the traditionally taught – and more modern – subject matters in a progressive manner. When homeschooling, it can be simpler to follow the child’s specific interests and see where they lead. Often, the content of the traditional curriculum will arise through real world situations.

For information about homeschooling in the province, the Ontario Federation of Teaching Parents (OFTP) can be helpful. This homeschooling support and advocacy group connects parents with extra curricular activities and classes, and can help with learning area-specific issues and problems.

How EP can help homeschoolers create a bespoke curriculum

There can be many reasons to try homeschooling for Ontario families. For some high school aged students, the social aspect of day-to-day life as a teenager can be a struggle within the restrictions of a schooling environment. For others, it is a case of having specific interests, which can be more closely followed without distraction from a home education perspective.

Whether your children are just starting out on their journey through education or have attended school for some time, homeschooling in Ontario provides the freedom to work at your own pace.
