By Philippa Kruger, Curriculum Specialist, Education Perfect
Last week, it was a privilege to be invited by the NZ Ministry of Education NCEA Languages Implementation Facilitators to talk about how Education Perfect (EP) can support every student in preparation for their online languages assessments. Languages educators in Aotearoa New Zealand are faced with the challenge of preparing their students for all examinations to be online this year.
Leveraging Tailored Resources for Exam Prep
We began the session by sharing the existing resources that are available within EP’s platform that can be used and adapted to prepare students for listening, reading, writing and speaking in their online exams. This includes our newest content, featuring authentic visual text lessons in authentic learning contexts. We demonstrated how these existing resources can be brought into an online exam environment and edited to adapt questions to exam style.
We then showed teachers how they can create their own custom exam questions within the platform using our content creation tools. This includes both listening and reading exam questions for external exam practice, as well as speaking and writing questions for students’ internal assessments.
Running Online Assessments
My colleague, Annie Barnett, an EP Solutions Consultant, demonstrated the mechanics of running an assessment within our platform. She showed:
- How to assign assessments to students
- An overview of the security settings before, during and after assessments
- How to mark and download assessments
Exploring Other Subjects
Finally, my colleague, Justin Paul, EP’s New Zealand Curriculum Specialist, discussed the wide range of resources we have available in other subject areas that have language and culture throughout them. This includes resources for NCEA Maths, English and Science with interwoven mātauranga Māori concepts. Justin also mentioned the amazing Samoan resources we have available that were created in conjunction with the Ministry of Education.
We hope that our New Zealand Languages teachers found this session helpful and informative in the lead up to exam period! We’d also like to thank NCEA Languages Implementation Facilitators for organising this session.
